Can I study in Spain after Brexit?

imgPost

Brexit has had a seismic impact on many people within the UK, none more so than those with aspirations to work or study abroad.

As of 1st January 2021, UK citizens can only stay in Spain for 90 out of every 180 days without a visa. And while Brexit might not have massive implications to short term tourism, there’s little doubt that it’s affected the chances of people wanting to stay in Spain longer term.

But wait… there’s a way around it. The dream is still alive. Because, while it’s definitely a lot more difficult to start a new chapter and move to Spain, there’s a clear pathway that will enable you to learn, earn and live life in sunny Spain. Here’s how.

Get a student visa

For anyone wanting to stay in Spain for more than 90 days, a visa is a must. So, if you’re a Brit wanting to work or study abroad, the best thing to do is to get a student visa.

Signing up for a TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) course makes you eligible for a long term visa, meaning you can work up to 20 hours per week as a paid student intern while you learn and soak up the sun.

How long can I stay in Spain on a long term student visa?

Long term student visas allow you to stay in the country for more than 6 months. You can extend your stay by applying for more courses.

What are the best TEFL courses to sign up for?

TEFL Iberia’s foundational Trinity CertTESOL Course gives you all the basics you’ll need – it’s perfect for those who’ve never taught before or who have a little experience in the classroom. Based in Barcelona, you’ll come out of your TEFL Iberia experience with all the essential skills and confidence you’ll need to get started with teaching English.

Follow it up with the Developing Teacher Course and you’ll progress your knowledge and hone your skills. If you sign up for both courses from the get go, you’ll be fully eligible for a long term student visa.

But wait… what if I’ve never even thought about teaching English?

Many TEFL teachers find themselves enrolling simply to find a way to live their dream life in Spain. And that’s fine!

Once they take the course, they not only learn about how to teach and inspire a class full of people, but they learn about themselves too! About how they have more confidence and ability than they ever realised.

Some use this new found confidence to pursue other careers or rise through the ranks within a TEFL school. Some carry on teaching and inspiring more people to learn English. Others even open their own TEFL school.

What do TEFL offer once I’m here?

Aside from excellent teacher training and a recognised qualification, you’ll have help every step of the way when it comes to securing your visa, your identity card (TIE) and your resident’s permit.

We’ll also help you find accommodation and, importantly, we’ll help you settle in, with a professional and social network that will help you find your feet and make the most out of living in this incredible city!
