Congratulations on completing your high school or university studies! You are now facing the daunting decision of what to do during your gap year. A gap year can be an excellent opportunity to travel, gain work experience, or learn new skills. In this post, we will explore some ideas for deciding what to do during your gap year, and how teaching English might be the best fit for you, plus my own (Jayde - TEFL Iberia's Director of Admissions) personal gap year survial tips.

1: Reflect on your goals and interests

The first step in deciding what to do during your gap year is to reflect on your goals and interests. Ask yourself what you want to achieve during your gap year. Do you want to learn a new language, gain work experience, or travel? Are you interested in exploring a particular culture or country? Are you considering a career in teaching or education? Reflecting on your goals and interests can help you narrow down your options and make a more informed decision.

2: Research different options

Once you have identified your goals and interests, start researching different options. There are countless opportunities available for gap year programs, including volunteering, internships, language courses, and work experience programs. Take some time to explore these options and see which ones align with your goals and interests.

3: Consider teaching English

Teaching English is an excellent option for a gap year. Not only does it provide an opportunity to travel and gain work experience, but it can also be a rewarding experience that allows you to make a positive impact on the lives of others. Teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) courses can be completed in just a few weeks and can provide you with the necessary skills and qualifications to teach English abroad. TEFL courses are offered in many countries, including Spain, and can be an excellent way to kick-start your gap year.

4: Evaluate the benefits of TEFL courses

TEFL courses can provide a wide range of benefits, including:

Qualifications: A TEFL certification can provide you with the qualifications and skills needed to teach English abroad.

Work experience: Teaching English can be an excellent way to gain work experience and develop your teaching skills.

Cultural immersion: Teaching English abroad can provide an opportunity to immerse yourself in a new culture and learn about different ways of life.

Language acquisition: Teaching English can also provide an opportunity to learn a new language and improve your communication skills.

5: Explore TEFL programs

8: Jayde’s account - My 5 gap year survival tips!

Embarking on a gap year will undoubtedly be one of the most memorable and transformative experiences of your life. If you're anything like me, that one year may evolve into four and counting amazing years of exploration and self-discovery.

During my time living abroad in Barcelona, I've gained valuable life lessons and skills. However, it's important to note that taking a gap year isn't always about picture-perfect Instagram posts and smooth sailing. To ensure you make the most out of your gap year, here are my five survival tips:

1: Embrace the challenges - It's tough out there. You'll inevitably feel homesick, lonely, and experience moments of self-doubt. But remember, some of the best times in life come right after the lowest moments. So keep pushing forward, conquer those obstacles, and enjoy the ride. Every experience will teach you something and contribute to your personal growth.

2: Expand your horizons - Living abroad is an entirely different ballgame compared to your hometown. Wherever you go, you'll encounter things that may seem strange or unfamiliar. Embrace this opportunity to immerse yourself in new cultures, social norms, and ways of life. Find comfort in the discomfort of the unknown and allow yourself to learn and adapt.

3: Mind your finances - Undoubtedly, you've put in a considerable amount of effort to save up for this adventure. While it may feel like you're the richest person alive with a healthy bank account, be cautious. I speak from experience when I say that without proper budgeting, you can quickly burn through your savings and find yourself in a sticky situation. Thankfully, I made it through, but learn from my mistakes. Research tips and strategies for managing your finances during a gap year.

4: Prioritize yourself - When forming friendships during your gap year, it's easy to adopt a "any friends will do" mentality. While this opens doors to meeting diverse individuals who differ greatly from your friends back home, don't lose sight of the fact that this journey is about you. Don't succumb to people-pleasing to keep others around. Focus on doing things that bring you joy and allow you to check off items on your personal bucket list.

5: Remember, home is always there - Taking the leap to move abroad can be intimidating. Trust me, I know firsthand how challenging it is to make that decision. However, always keep in mind that if your journey doesn't unfold as expected, it's okay. You've already shown immense courage by pursuing something that most people only dream of. Celebrate that accomplishment, as it is not a failure. Whether you stay for four weeks, three months, or eight months, you've still undergone a life-changing experience, and that's something to be proud of!

So, go ahead, embrace your gap year adventure with an open heart and mind. Cherish the highs and navigate through the lows, for the journey itself will shape you in ways you never thought possible.
